About Us
National Running Center got its start in 1987, with Tim Ritchie, Dennis McWhorter, and their wives travelling to running club meetings and road races to sell our gear, back when expos were few and far between. We were like the doctor who made house calls. We had this goal to get runners the gear they needed in the most convenient and inexpensive manner possible. We sold a very limited number of items, but we knew from personal experience that they were exactly what a runner needed, but couldn’t easily find. And, since we had some friends in the apparel business we were able to sell our stuff at really low prices. Nearly every employee was a competitive runner, and frequently one or more of us would run the race after working the expo booth. (By the way, that’s a great way to meet customers, but NOT a good recipe for a marathon PR…).
Since those early days our hand-picked, personally-approved product line has expanded greatly and so have the ways our growing numbers of customers can find us. We are still a family owned business with the same people at the helm and a second generation in the trenches, but we’ve added a catalog, a web store, and a retail store. However, in all that change we’ve never lost that vision from 25 years ago to make finding that perfect piece of running gear easy and inexpensive.
We still bring that convenience to hundreds of road races, and though some may think we are some big impersonal web store or catalog, we are much more down-to-earth, and one-on-one than that. We think and act smaller. Think “family” vs. “corporate”. While we have met tens of thousands of our customers at a race, often we can put a name with a face (or even a voice), and never lose sight of the fact that the only customer who matters is you.
